FAQs
Do LIFX smart lights require a hub or bridge?
No. Every LIFX product connects directly to your home's 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi. No hub, bridge, or extra hardware needed. Just screw in the bulb, open the LIFX app, and you're live in minutes.
What smart home platforms do LIFX lights work with?
LIFX works natively with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings, all included at no extra cost. You can control any LIFX product by voice or through your preferred smart home app, and mix products across different platforms in the same setup.
What's the difference between LIFX SuperColor and LIFX Everyday?
LIFX SuperColor is built for maximum color performance, delivering billions of deeply saturated, vivid colors across the full spectrum plus tunable whites from 1500K to 9000K and up to 1,600 lumens. LIFX Everyday also supports color, but with less saturation and vibrancy. It's a solid entry point for anyone who wants color flexibility without needing the full intensity SuperColor delivers.
Which LIFX product should I start with?
For a living room or bedroom, the LIFX SuperColor A19 1-Pack (1,100 lumens) or 2-Pack is the go-to starting point. For under-cabinet or accent lighting, try the 40" Lightstrip Kit. For ceiling coverage without a shade, the 15" SuperColor Ceiling Light replaces your existing fixture entirely with no bulb required.
How many LIFX lights can I control at once?
The LIFX app supports unlimited devices on a single account with no per-device or per-location fees. Group them by room, assign them to scenes, or set schedules. Everything runs through one app across your entire home with no tier limits on device count.
Can I use LIFX lights outdoors?
Yes. LIFX offers a dedicated outdoor range including the Outdoor SuperColor Spot Light, Flood Light, String Lights 24ft Kit, Path Lights (round and square), Neon Flex Outdoor 16ft, and Permanent Lights 50ft Kit. All outdoor models are rated for weather exposure and support full color control via the LIFX app.
What's the difference between LIFX Lightstrip and LIFX Neon Flex?
Lightstrips are thin, flexible LED strips best suited for under-cabinet runs, TV backlighting, and shelf accents. Neon Flex uses a continuous silicone tube that diffuses light evenly with no visible hotspots, making it ideal for shaped wall art, curved installations, or any application where a clean neon glow is the goal.
What are retrofit vs. canless downlights and which do I need?
Retrofit downlights fit into existing recessed cans (4" or 6") and are the right choice if you already have recessed lighting installed. Canless downlights mount directly to the ceiling without a housing can and are designed for new installations or spaces with no existing recessed fixtures. Both connect directly to Wi-Fi with no hub required.
Do LIFX lights work if my internet goes down?
Basic on/off, brightness, tunable white, and color control all continue to work on your local Wi-Fi network even without internet access. Full functionality, including app control from outside your home, firmware updates, and voice assistant commands, requires an active internet connection.
Can I control LIFX lights without a smartphone?
Yes. A traditional wall switch gives you basic on/off control. For hands-free control, connect LIFX to Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, or Samsung SmartThings and use voice commands. For the most flexibility, LIFX Smart Switches (2-button and 4-button, available in glass or plastic, black or white) wire in-wall like a standard switch and are programmable to trigger specific scenes, routines, or rooms without opening the app.
