String Light Setup

Everything you need to install and onboard your String Lights is included in the box.

In the box:

  • 24ft length string light.
  • 12 uniquely addressable LED bulbs.
  • Weather-proof power supply.
  • Outdoor Wi-FI controller.
  • 10.5ft length power cable.

You’ll Need:

  • A smartphone (iOS 18.0+ or Android 8.1+)
  • The LIFX app (download from App Store or Google Play
  • A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (Most smart devices require 2.4 GHz. If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, that’s usually fine.)
  • Your Wi-Fi password

Important Notes:

  • Keep your phone near the light during setup.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
  • Ensure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the light to use.

Installation steps

  1. Connect all the pieces in the kit together securely.
  2. Plug the controller into a power outlet — use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupting (GFCI) outlet where possible.
  3. Press the button on the controller for 2 seconds. A light will run down the full length of the string as it detects and counts all connected pieces.

Combining 2 or 3 kits (optional)

  1. Unplug the power, then unscrew the end cap on each string.
  2. Connect the strings together and tighten the connector caps to ensure a secure, watertight seal.
  3. Power back on, then press the controller button to re-count all pieces. Do not connect more than 3 kits (72' total).

Tips

  • Do not secure the string with staples, nails, or other sharp or conductive materials — do not damage the wire.
  • Keep at least 16 ft (4.8 m) from pools and spas. Keep plugs and receptacles dry. Do not submerge.
  • Do not mount near heaters, fireplaces, or candles.
  • Do not hang ornaments or other objects from the cord or bulbs.
  • Do not use with an incandescent dimmer.
  • To factory reset, turn the light off and on at the switch 5 times (roughly one switch per second). The light will cycle through four colors and stop on white when the reset is successful.

What makes LIFX String Lights different from regular string lights?

Each bulb contains three individually addressable color zones, giving 36 zones of control across a single string. This lets you blend multiple colors within a single bulb and create motion-like effects, rather than just switching the whole string one color at a time.

How long are they, and can I extend them?

Each string is 24 feet long with 12 uniquely addressable LED bulbs, and you can connect up to 3 kits together for a total length of 72 feet.

How bright are they, and what's the color range?

At full brightness the string outputs a total of 600 lumens. For whites, you get a range from a very warm 1,500 Kelvin up to a cool 9,000K, plus full LIFX SuperColor.

Do I need a hub or bridge to set them up?

No — there's no bridge or hub required, just a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection. Setup is done through the LIFX app (or directly via Apple Home/Google Home QR code pairing).

Are they weatherproof for permanent outdoor use?

Yes. Our outdoor string lights carry an IP66 outdoor rating, and we've built them with premium materials, heavy-duty cabling, outdoor-rated seals, and discreet anchor points for a seamless install — designed to endure the elements season after season.

What voice assistants and smart home platforms do they work with?

We natively support Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant — so you can turn on the mood lighting for a BBQ or backyard party with a simple voice command or automation. Keep in mind our Themes and FX effects are only available through the LIFX app, since third-party platforms are limited to basic on/off, color, and brightness commands (Apple Shortcuts is an exception, letting you trigger specific themes remotely).
