Circadian Rhythm What is a circadian rhythm? An internal, biological clock that controls when your organs, tissues and hormones do their work. It runs your sleep-wake cycle — roughly 16 hours awake, 8 asleep — by reading the light around you and releasing melatonin when it thinks the sun has gone down.Almost every living thing has one. A flower opens its petals before dawn because its clock only ever answers to sunlight. Ours answers to whatever is brightest in the room — and that's usually a bulb or a screen.
Lighting that follows your body clock
Your body runs on a 24 hour circadian rhythm, guided by the light around you. Circadian Rhythm mirrors the sun through the day, from cool, bright white that helps you wake and focus to warm, dim amber that helps you unwind, so your lights work with your body instead of against it.
The science
Light controls melatonin, the hormone that makes you sleepy. Cool, bright morning light suppresses it to boost alertness, while warm, dim light at night lets it rise so you fall asleep naturally.

Wake with the sun
Thirty minutes before your alarm the lights start at a deep 1800K amber, so low you'd never catch it moving, and climb steadily to bright 6000K white - the same colour temperature as midday sun.
Waking to light rather than noise means coming out of a lighter stage of sleep, and getting bright light in the first hour is the strongest single cue your body clock takes all day. Most people find they're awake before the alarm within a week.
Hold your focus
The working block sits at bright, slightly cool white - 4500-5000K at near-full output. Cool light feeds the pathway that governs alertness, which is why offices and studios are lit this way and living rooms aren't.
It also keeps the room honest: nothing in a 5000K room suggests it's time to wind down, so the morning doesn't quietly turn into the afternoon while you're still trying to concentrate.
Through the afternoon dip
Everyone has a slump somewhere between two and four - it's a normal feature of the circadian cycle, not a personal failing. The schedule holds bright neutral light through it rather than letting the room drift warm along with your energy.
Holding the light steady here is the difference between riding the dip out and losing two hours to it. Come five o'clock, the room starts to change and you get a clear signal the working part of the day is ending.
Ease into the evening
Brightness comes off first, then the colour drifts warm - down through 3000K to about 2700K by dinner. Slow enough that nobody in the house notices it happening, which is exactly why it works.
This is the stretch that decides how the night goes. An evening lit like the middle of the day pushes your sleep later; an evening that gradually looks like dusk lets the wind-down start on its own.
Sleep prep
The last ninety minutes drop to candle amber - 2000K and lower, dim enough to read a paper book by. Warm, low light is far less disruptive than cool light at the same brightness, so the sleep signal gets a clear run at it.
After lights out, a deep red night light in the hall or bathroom means a 3am trip doesn't restart your night. Everything else is off, and tomorrow's sunrise is already armed.
